When it comes to buying or designing a house, do you prefer open plan spaces or a series of more intimate individual rooms? Both layouts for me have their merits, but I think you have to be very careful when opting for a full open plan solution. Before getting carried away with designing a house you really need to consider so many points and whether something that you like the look of is actually right for you and your family.

You need to consider the question of open plan vs individual rooms carefully.

You often see trim and doors painted in white. However, you can get quite a different effect if you paint these areas in a darker tone.

This is a very effective way of using a light coloured paint on the walls without the look appearing one dimensional.

This look is perfect for a country or transitional style home.

Look at a colour wheel and you will find teetering on the edge of blue and almost meeting green, the colour Duck Egg Blue, often also referred to as Robin’s Nest Blue.

Generally accepted to be in the blue family, when looked at closely, many will perceive this colour as green.

Colorbond Monument is a much loved off-black, warm

Colorbond Monument is a much loved off-black, warm dark grey which is perfect for exteriors.

I find it preferable to pure black which can be very heavy, although it partners with it perfectly when you need a contrast.

Brass lights work perfectly with it as Monument has a warm brown undertone. You can use this colour for walling, roofs, gutters, fascias and windows. It's perfect for a classic Hamptons style roof or it is equally at home on a contemporary home.

The beauty of Zellige tiles is in their craftmanship. With their origins in North Africa, these handmade clay tiles are loved for their uniqueness.

Each one is slightly different which adds to their appeal, however this also presents some issues with using these tiles. As with everything when you are renovating or building, the hidden costs of installation can often send the budget into meltdown.

I must say however, that all interiors need a touch of uniqueness or you run the risk of the outcome being bland and lovingly made tiles can be the perfect way to judiciously add that finishing touch.
