Wow! Jimmy and Tam walked away from The Block 2020 as winners with a cool $1,066.000. House number 5, which was faithfully renovated in a Retro 1950s style, sold for a whopping $4.256,000 which was $966,000 above the reserve. I must say that I am thrilled to see this outcome as they were the only contestants who steadfastly met the brief each week. They were often derided in the media for some of their room reveals, which I have to say were pretty out there. As the season progressed, you could see that there was certainly a refinement to their Retro style. They were still meeting the brief but with a lot more finesse and it was a joy to see this progression.
There is the adage that you only need 2 people to really love your house at an auction. It doesn’t have to appeal to absolutely everyone, it just needs to connect emotionally with a limited number, who will love it for its uniqueness.
Jimmy and Tam’s house often had a feel of California about it, particularly the exterior. So many people felt it didn’t fit with the Brighton buyer. I loved many of the interior reveals but didn’t like the exterior as I felt it suited the Californian desert better than our lovely Brighton. But what do you know, the buyer who absolutely fell in love with it was from the US. What a lesson this is. All I kept hearing about was the Brighton buyer and I was one of these many years ago. But this demonstrates that in the land of The Block, this doesn’t seem to matter.
Luke and Jasmin delivered the house that was the most Instagram friendly and which would have appealed to so many buyers, but I think that this is the point. It did have wide appeal, but was like many others on the market. It shows that when it comes to The Block, anything can happen.
Jimmy and Tam stuck to their guns, even with their Retro outfits for the Auction, and it served them well. I am very happy that they are The Block 2020 winners.
