The Block 2024 master bedroom belongs to Kristian and Mimi. They had the stand out room reveal this week with an absolutely stunning colour palette and beautifully finished bedroom. I was pretty underwhelmed with every other space, although there were merits to all of them. None of the teams came close to the success of this room though.
I'm also at a loss to understand why the walk in wardrobes, as nice as many of them were, needed to be the size they were. These are holiday homes on the laidback coastal retreat of Philip Island. Does a couple really need to bring that many clothes, hats and shoes with them for a two week break? Even if this is your permanent second home, you will need to be a keen shopper to fill this space. I wouldn't mind the challenge though! With walk in wardrobes this size, they should have all contained a dressing table, which not all of them did. It will be interesting to see the future room reveals. I hope that space has not been compromised for a show stopping walk in wardrobe.
As usual, I have all the rooms, the judges' comments and my own, together with some links to purchase my favourite pieces this week. If you do click on one of these, I may receive a small commission which in no way impacts on the price you will pay.
The Block 2024 Master Bedroom
Tied First Place: Kristian and Mimi 28 points
From the raked ceiling with HomePro sheers, to the Wave bedhead, Foundation bed base and Dot ottoman (from Steph and Gian’s new Japandi Estate collection) and beautiful Artist Lane artworks including the Cape Woolamai Phillip Island piece from Ella Boylan, this was a room that screamed “Coastal Holiday” for Marty. Not everything was perfect however, with unfinished paintwork and mismatched door handles bothering Shaynna and the LED lighting next to the couple’s trademark Porta Timber feature a bit jarring for Marty. Darren found the bedside light switches too far away and only one bedside lamp an unusual choice, but overall, they agreed it was a great room… very nearly worth a ten! The wardrobe with new Budino Walnut joinery and Hafele upgrades was a winner, they all agreed, with its drop-down hangers, luxurious leather boxes, trouser racks, shoe drawers and more. “Luxury upon luxury!” Darren said.
My thoughts on Kristian and Mimi's master bedroom
- The colour palette in this room is stunning. A beautiful related palette that is warm and comforting. With texture from the rug, boucle chair, suede ottoman, cushions and throws, this is a very welcoming space. Just perfect for a holiday home bedroom.
- I really like the bedhead which suits the space perfectly and I absolutely love the walnut bedside tables. Don't be frightened to mix timbers. You can see that Kristian and Mimi have done this really well with the wall panelling in oak and the bedside tables in walnut. Because both tones work with the colour palette, it has all been tied together well.
- The colour of the curtains suits the space perfectly.
- The walk in wardrobe in walnut is beautiful, but it needed a make-up station and chair. If you're going to have such a stunning walk in wardrobe, you need to have somewhere to sit that has a mirror. There isn't anywhere in the bedroom either, so this is a big omission.
- I agree with the judges on the bedside lights too. There should definitely be a second one.
- Other than these two small points, this room is a stunning success and should have taken first place on its own.
Tied First Place: Courtney and Grant 28 points
“Yum!” said Darren as he took in Grant and Courtney’s Moditerranean main, from the arched ceiling, nib walls to hide the HomePro sheers, bullnose plaster accents and more, this was a room, Marty declared, that was “THE most marketable room that's been delivered on The Block in 2024”. Beautifully styled with a Globe West Occasional chair, Kolbi Luna Moon side table and Create Estate Fern bed, Shaynna agreed, this was going to be hard to beat. In the Kinsman wardrobe, the shelving, stone, leather texture on the cabinetry all drew praise, with Marty wondering if he could be a bidder himself.
My thoughts on Courtney and Grant's master bedroom
- This is a second place room. There is lots to love about it, but the bed just dominates the space and the rest of the room is just too busy.
- Now I love texture in a room. Often a scheme can fall flat without it, but there is just too much in this space. The rouched finish of the bedhead in a rich velvet against a wall of busy panelling is overwhelming. Continuing this around the bedbase accentuates the cumbersome nature of the bed which is out of proportion to the space. Two tiny side tables have been squeezed in, which although they are absolutely gorgeous, are too small.
- The wavy mirror is too busy, as is the wall hanging on the diamond feature wallpaper.
- I do absolutely love the artwork over the bed which works perfectly with the colour palette. The herringbone oak floor is beautiful and the fire is a great inclusion in this location.
- The walk in wardrobe is nicely planned with a great make-up station using the same beautiful marble that they used in their ensuite. Overall there is lots to love here, it just needed to be toned down a little.
Third Place: Kylie and Brad 27.5 points
Classy and luxe while still keeping Kylie’s dark and moody palette, house four’s main was a huge win with the judges. “Talk about personality!” Marty gushed. “The Shou Sugi Ban feature wall is incredible with the up lighting,” Shaynna said, pointing to the burgundy accents, metallic Grafico ceiling, the Arthur console, Wyatt Milan bedside and Bonnie Occasional chair all from Globe West. “This works so well!”. From the functionality of the Mitsubishi split-system to the nods to feng shui, everything just worked, they agreed. Into the wardrobe and the compliments continued, with another Grafico ceiling and wall, a complementing Wild Yarn Marley rug, and perfect panelling choices. The only criticism came from Shaynna, who wished the styling had gone a little more upmarket than ripped jean shorts. Overall however, it was a success, the judges agreed: “Like walking into a jewelry box!” Darren said.
My thoughts on Kylie and Brad's walk in wardrobe
- This room reveal doesn't appeal to me as it doesn't fit with the relaxed Philip Island coastal vibe. It's a bit more Gold Coast Lux. Having said that, there are elements that I do like and are successful in this space.
- The dark wall is too dominant and closes in the space. I'm not a fan of a large degree of black in bedrooms, however it could work if the black was just taken to the first level with either a wallpaper or some stunning artwork on the walls above.
- The rug is really nice, but should have either just zoned the seating area or the bed. I do love the runner in the walk in wardrobe.
- The gold is over the top, but will hold appeal for some buyers. It has been executed well and the ceiling is rather stunning.
- The rich plum coloured chairs look amazingly comfortable and I love the console table.
- The oversized dressing table works well too. It looks good and is really practical.
Fourth Place: Maddy and Charlotte 24.5 points
With an elevated neutral palette and floor-to-ceiling crushed linen sheers, the judges were relieved to see Maddy and Charlotte had embraced a more coastal look to replace the previous Blockhead’s “Grandma Chic”. With the Velux skylight overhead and Hardie Groove feature wall, with the Bordeaux Candle and T. House Zoi bowl just right, this was a great start, they agreed – but it was time to think big! The Kave Home Luisa armchair and bedsides could have been larger, Shaynna said. Into the Kinsman wardrobe and Darren was instantly in love, the colours are all on trend he said, with the fittings executed well. With not one but three teams working on this room at various stages, it would have been tough, Marty said, but they were heading in the right direction.
My thoughts on Maddy and Charlotte's master bedroom
- The neutral colour palette in this room is just too simple. It's a large space and it all just seems a bit lost.
- The bedside tables are too small and are completely out of proportion and the room desperately needs a large rug. This would add much needed additional texture which is really important for a very neutral scheme.
- I love the artwork and the cabinet, but the artwork needs to be properly hung. Hopefully just propping it here is due to a lack of time.
- The corner chairs, side table and pendant lamps are all successful as are the stunning linen curtains.
- This is a good start for Maddy and Charlotte. Their styling is very nice. The room just needed more of everything; rugs, artwork, mirrors and larger bedside tables.
Fifth Place: Ricky and Haydn 21.5 points
At first glance, the judges found a lot to like in Ricky and Haydn’s main retreat. From the Grafico wallpaper with custom palm trees, custom ceiling and panelling, Bohteak Bora Bora lamps and matching single teak Branch Mirror, it was all impressive they agreed. But Marty had a question: “Is the amount of effort needed to finish that ceiling the reason you clearly ran out of time?”. Because unlike other homes, the boys didn’t manage to complete the space in time. The Kinsman walk-in was complete and the judges loved the scalloped door profile plus Brown Bronze handles were a hit, but again they had questions. Why carpet this area when the bedroom had floorboards, ask Shaynna. Was the door really in the right place? Added Marty. Another room that looked rushed, summed up Darren, leaving them with: “An unfinished symphony.”
My thoughts on Ricky and Haydn's master bedroom
- What a shame that these guys didn't finish the room. I really liked their last bedroom reveal and this one was shaping up to be successful too.
- I love the offset panelling behind the bed with the stunning wallpaper. The bedhead and bedside cabinets complete the look well.
- The ceiling is stunning, but perhaps did take too much time to deliver.
- The rug is gorgeous and generous in size and the walk in wardrobe is beautifully finished. I actually do like the carpet in there as it is nicer when you are getting dressed.
- The bedding wasn't complete, but it looks as though the bedspread is too small. Always remember to buy bedding one size larger than your bed if possible to ensure that it drapes well over the sides.
