Natural daylight is a rare commodity for Scandinav

Natural daylight is a rare commodity for Scandinavians during the long winter months. Even during the summer the light is softer and greyer than the bright sunlight that we are used to in Australia.

Northern light is quite different and therefore homes in Scandinavia are designed to let in as much natural light as possible and to trap it there. Therefore rather than using paint colours, flooring and furnishings that will absorb light, every element in an interior scheme is carefully curated to ensure that natural light bounces around the room.

At first glance, it sounds overwhelming, however this is a useful design tool to use as depending on the colour and tone you select, it can create a very calming environment that acts as a background for artworks and other items you want to display.

Alisa and Lysandra, design duo sisters, did just that for their mum. They remodelled the bathroom to make it larger, but otherwise kept the footprint and gave it an amazing makeover.

Have you noticed how appliance cupboards are getting larger? These are great for storing appliances that you don't want on show all the time and perfect for a coffee and tea making area.

Pocket doors have been used in this design which is perfect as they slide to the side of the cabinet and keep out of everyone's way.

Always consider how you will finish the interior of an appliance cupboard like this one. Continuing the use of marble works well here and using a timber veneer for the shelving adds another nice design point.
