On a recent trip to England I revisited a house th

On a recent trip to England I revisited a house that I used to live in. I didn't get to go inside, but just standing outside filled me with lots of emotion.

This was my family home when I was a late teenager. It's an English Heritage Grade II listed cottage with lots of history, including some of mine.

This was all the more poignant as the trip was to attend my dad's funeral. The doors throughout are very low and my dad was 6 feet tall, so there was lots of bad language until he remembered to duck his head!

I am a big fan of green and it has made my heart sing to see the trend growing stronger for green kitchens. In fact, I’m wondering whether green is the new navy blue. I swoon over most kitchens with colour, although my own one is white! But I can dream and I am pretty sure that if I had another kitchen to makeover, I would opt for a gorgeous rich grey green. When it comes to buying or designing a house, do you prefer open plan spaces or a series of more intimate individual rooms? Both layouts for me have their merits, but I think you have to be very careful when opting for a full open plan solution. Before getting carried away with designing a house you really need to consider so many points and whether something that you like the look of is actually right for you and your family.

You need to consider the question of open plan vs individual rooms carefully.
